Off to the Races

The Dreamers are a pretty well behaved group of kids. Of course they’re not perfect, but they do pretty well. Almost every time I go out with them somewhere, they are complimented on their behavior.

When the Dreamers get bored is when the misbehavior begins. The girls usually do a pretty good job at keeping themselves busy making clothes for their dolls or making up games to play. The boys, however, are a different story. When they get bored they begin to bother each other and argue. The boredom is like the quiet before the storm. The Tias try and keep them busy so this won’t be a problem, but there are only so many things that keep their attention.

Last week, the boys were at it. It seemed like every few seconds someone had to be corrected. To keep them out of trouble, I thought it would be a good idea for them to burn some energy. I took them away from the girls, and send them to put on their tennis shoes so that we could do some exercises. Jumping Jacks, Push-ups, Sit-ups, lunges, then running in place, they loved it. They were so excited, we decided to take our little exercise party outside. We did another set of exercises then had some relay races. It was a great time, and even some of the girls joined in! Best of all, no one got in trouble.

Can we freeze time at this very moment?

Boys with their dinosaurs

Roberto, Jose Luis, and Gabriel created a dino safari this afternoon in the grass of our front yard. I love the innocence on their faces. I love the normal-ness of seeing them create fascinating worlds with their imagination. I want to freeze this moment in time so they will never grow up… Peter Pan wishes for our boys.

Yet, grow up they will. And they will look back at their time in the House of Dreams with fondness. They will remember never being short of playmates. They will remember not having to worry about their next meal. They will know they are special and important.

This season, as we celebrate the Incarnation of our Lord, I am grateful that we can bring to life God incarnate as we care for these little ones. Those of you who give, pray, and volunteer can know that you are a part of something holy and truly good. Thank you for joining us as we make dreams come true at The House of Dreams.

Peace,

Gabriel wins 3rd place!

Gabriel and his class ran on stage when their school was named as the third place winners.

Last Saturday, Gabriel’s class participated in an arts and dance competition for kids with special needs.  Various special education schools in Cochabamba participated.  Gabriel’s class presented a comical choreography of “Los abuelos”  (The grandparents).

Grabriel was happy to play the part of the younger older man because he said he was not going to where those itchy beards.   I was so happy to see Gabriel breaking away from his shyness and see him dance with a big smile on stage.

Gabriel’s Dinosaur Pictures

The Bolivian school system runs on a morning / afternoon schedule for students of all ages. Some kids go in the mornings, some in the afternoons. Gabriel attends a school to help him learn at his pace and overcome some of the challenges his brain presents him with. He goes in the afternoons.

Last Wednesday morning I arrived a bit early to see Alicia’s parents before they all went to the courthouse for the adoption. So Alicia, Gabriel, and I got to hang out a bit. I pulled out my camera so we could “play” together. Alicia had no problem hamming it up; but Gabriel shies away from lenses.

I knew this about him. So, after Alicia had her fun and got busy with something else, I had an idea. I asked Gabriel if he wanted to take some pictures. His face lit up.

He wanted to take pictures of his dinosaurs. He lined them up in just the right position. He took care to compose the shots in the viewfinder screen before he clicked. As he photographed his toys we chatted.

He told me he wanted to see real dinosaurs. I told him about the dinosaur display in Sucre where the scale sculptures are taller than houses. We talked about vacations and travel. He gave me his signature bashful smile when he talked about the people he cares about. I had such a nice time with him.

As you look through the images captured by this nine-year-old boy please pray for him. He can be adopted. His papers have been ready for years. He was assigned by the government to a family, yet because of the undiagnosable issues with his learning they said no. He would flourish under the care and attention a proper mama and papa. Pray that God’s will would be done for Gabriel. Thank you.

Out to Lunch

Last week, I blogged about Gabriel and how he is going to school in the afternoons instead of the mornings. Yesterday, I decided to take advantage of his free time and take him out for lunch.

His choice? Fried chicken and french fries.

He said that he had never tried fried chicken before, but it was love at first bite. Through the whole meal he talked about how good it was, continuously asking me why he hadn’t tried it before. And every time, I replied with the same answer, “I don’t know.”

It was a great experience for Gabriel to be able to get out and get some one on one attention. In a house of sixteen it’s not often that any of the kids get exclusive attention. We had a great time.

Afternoon Classes

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of getting to meet Gabriel, then I’m sure you figured out right off the bat that he’s not much of a talker.  Not too often, but there are times when he gets in the mood I suppose and will talk your ear off, but mainly only to people he’s very familiar with.  Being a loner has worked mostly in his favor as he now goes to school in the afternoons, giving him a few hours of alone time in the mornings.

Gabriel has a learning disability, so he goes to a special school that’s different than the school that the rest of the Dreamers attend. He used to go to school during the mornings as well but his school has made some changes, so now his classes are in the afternoons instead.

Take a moment to pray for Gabriel as he grows and continues to develop into the fine young man that he is!

17 Resolutions

With it being a new year and all, I had a chance to sit down with the Dreamers and ask them what were their goals/resolutions for this year. Here is what they had to say:

Anne: “I want to be on the honor roll and be the best student.”

Isaura: “To eat.”

Benancio: “I want to go to school this year.”

Estefani: “To learn English.”

Jose: “I want to be older.”

Juan Daniel: “Go to school and start kindergarten.”

Yamil: “I want to learn something special.”

Shirley: “I want to grow taller and buy a cell phone.”

Jhoselyn: “This year, I want to go to the pool and learn how to swim.”

Some of the Dreamers enjoying some Christmas candy they received over the holidays.

Gabriel: “I want to be a better student in school.”

Jose Luis: “I want to make a dinosaur.”

Alicia: “I want my snack!”

Fernando: “I’m going to learn English in school this year. I’m going to kindergarten.”

Vladimir: “I want to have a birthday.”

Emelin: “I’m going to be good this year.”

Roberto: “I am going to learn how to play soccer better.”

These are the resolutions of our Dreamers! I’m hoping and praying that they are all able to reach their goals this year!

*Note: Joel was unable to answer because he decided to take an impromptu nap while we were having this conversation. We’ll have to ask him for his later.

What are your goals and resolutions for this year? Care to share?

The Packages!

For the second year in a row The Rock Church of Louisiana did Christmas boxes for the Dreamers. The boxes started arriving last week. They await our annual wrapping day stashed secretly in the front room of our home.

We are so grateful to Rocky and Jodi Bezet and all the members of the congregation who helped to send all the boxes of fun stuff down. You are amazing!

The ladies at the post office get just as excited as we do when they see the boxes start coming.

My strong man made a few trips up and down the stairs at the post office. I kept the motor running double parked on the street.

The first load of 25... there are 37 in all coming!

These guys will have a very merry Christmas!

The prehistoric phase

Most little boys go through a phase of fasination with dinsours.  Our boys at the House of Dreams are now at that phase!  They watch their favorite dinosour movies, and everyday they’re playing with their dinosaur figurines.

Jose Luis, playing with his dinosaurs.

Gabriel is the  most fasinated by these prehistoric creatures of all the boys.  He memorizes the names of the dinosaurs, and just about everyday he ask if he can have some real dinosaur bones!

Gabriel, proud of his dinosaur coloring page

I wonder what phase comes after dinosaurs?
